Mater, an ethical design brand based in Denmark, has launched a furniture collection made from plastic reclaimed from the ocean.
Described as the 'ideal marriage of high-design and material innovation', the two-piece collection, called the Ocean Collection is based on original designs, dating back to 1955, by Jørgen and Nanna Ditzel, designers renowned for their use of organic and innovative materials.
Characterised by a light structure, repeated slats and metal frame, the collection consists of a table and chair reimagined in reclaimed plastic made from recycled fishing nets, utilising a Danish scheme that encourages fishermen across the world to dispose of discarded fishing nets at the world's only fishing new recycling plant, which is located in Denmark.
Dennie Ditzel, daughter of Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel , who has been overseeing the Ditzel archive since her mother's death in 2005, says of the collaboration: "My mother was fascinated by new materials and always experiment with them, so this just be ideal for her - this new iteration is very much in her spirit."
Henrik Marstrand, CEO & founder of Mater, says: "Our planet is struggling and never before has it been more obvious that we need to take action to protect our environment. We are facing a global recycling crisis with plastic waste filling the ocean. If we can create a product that is attractive, functional and durable, while cleaning up after the side effects of our collective consumerism, it's a win-win."
